BRIMINGHAM, Ala.—The senior sprinter Susan Aneno competed in the finals of the Women's 800 Meters on Saturday, March 9th at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Aneno finished sixth overall in a very talented and speedy field of student-athletes from Penn State, Penn, Virginia Tech, Monmouth, Norfolk State, Indiana, and Texas A&M. Her time of 2:05.86 nabbed her All-American honors and was her third fastest time of the indoor season.
"Susan's goal was to come back with All-American honors, and she accomplished that mission. I'm proud of her efforts and how she represents the University of Connecticut."
-Head Coach J.J. Clark
The seventh ranked senior progressed to the finals after being the fastest qualifier in the prelims with a time of 2:05.55. This speedy finish was not only the fastest time overall but the fastest in her heat. Aneno was the intermediate leader through the 400 meters, 600 meters and on to finish the race.
For her senior indoor campaign, Aneno put together a phenomenal resume. Starting with the second meet, she established herself as an NCAA top contender in the 800 Meters posting a time of 2:03.94 which was the No.2 time in the country back in January. This tremendous performance also shattered the school record set by Heather Wilson in 2012. Aneno is now a two-time American Athletic Conference 800 Meter Champion, after going back-to-back with a time of 2:06.54. Her progression in the 800 Meters follows; 2:03.94—Vanderbilt Invitational, 2:04.67—Scarlet & White Invite, and the aforementioned 2:06.54—AAC Indoor Championships.
Aneno was named First Team All-America.
