Colangelo Tabbed as Captain for 2019-20, Women’s Hockey Presents Season Award Winners

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's hockey team will have a new locker room leader for the 2019-20 campaign, as rising senior Briana Colangelo was voted team captain, as announce by head coach Chris MacKenzie Tuesday afternoon. Colangelo becomes the 22nd player in program history to have this honor bestowed upon her.
"We have many leaders in our program that help form our team culture," said head coach Chris MacKenzie. "These four were recognized and voted on by their teammates to be designated captains. In regards to leadership, they each bring something unique that will help our program going forward."
Colangelo, the Whitby, Ontario native who served as an alternate captain for the 2018-19 season, appeared in all 36 games at forward for the Huskies registering seven goals and a team-high 18 assists.
Additionally, rising seniors Catherine Crawley and Emily Reid along with rising junior Natalie Snodgrass were selected as alternate captains for the ensuing season after each posted successful seasons on the ice.
UConn enters the 2019-20 season coming off a 14-18-4 mark and an appearance in the Hockey East quarterfinals. The Huskies will look to build on that momentum and turn in another successful season, and Colangelo, Crawley, Reid and Snodgrass are four key returners for the Huskies.
Crawley skated in all 36 games and finished tied for third on the team in points (24) with 10 goals and 14 helpers. Additionally, the forward ended the season ranked sixth among Hockey East players with a .576 faceoff percentage.
In 36 games, Reid accumulated two goals and three assists as a junior defenseman. On the defensive end, she accounted for 42 blocks and helped UConn kill of 85.4 percent of its opponent's power plays.
After a breakout freshman season, Snodgrass showed no signs of a sophomore slump as she turned in another strong season, leading the Huskies in goals (15) and points (29) for the second-consecutive year. She also ended the year in a four-way tie for second-place in assists with 14.
Additionally, Coach MacKenzie and the coaching staff announced the recipients of the 2018-19 team awards. These individuals were recognized for their respective performances during the 2018-19 season.
2018-19 Team Awards
MVP – Jaime Fox | Senior | D | Unionville, Ontario
Fox excelled in her role as team captain this past season as she provided stability and leadership for the hockey team both on and off the ice. Additionally, she posted nine points on four assists and a career-high five goals to go along with 57 blocks, good for second-place on the team.
Most Improved Player – Danielle Fox | Freshman | F | Unionville, Ontario
Dani skated in all 36 games during her freshman season, tallying one goal and one assist.
Rookie of the Year – Danika Pasqua | Freshman | F | Langley, British Columbia
Pasqua had a sold season in 32 games at forward for UConn. She recorded seven goals and one assist - including three scores in the final six games of the season, emerging as a future scoring threat for the Huskies.
Pat Babcock Award – Jaime Fox | Senior | D | Unionville, Ontario
Catherine Crawley | Junior | F | Washingtonville, N.Y.
The Pat Babcock Award, named for the former UConn Division of Athletic Administrator and given to the player who best exemplifies the team on and off the ice, was awarded to Jaime Fox and Catherine Crawley. Fox and Crawley both provided a consistent presence on the ice and in the locker room, while also initiating various service projects for student-athletes to take part in throughout the academic year. Crawley was recently awarded the Female Community Outreach Athlete of the Year Award

Crawley and Colangelo picked up the Unsung Hero Award for the 2018-19 season. Colangelo always looked for the open teammate as she totaled a team-leading 18 assists with 14 blocks, while Crawley finished tied for third on the team in points (24) and tied for second with 14 helpers.
