No. 4 Huskies Beat No. 15 Northwestern in Season Opener

STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Marie Auer scored twice in her collegiate debut as the No. 4 UConn field hockey team opened the 2019 season with a 4-1 win over No. 15 Northwestern Saturday.
Senior Svea Boker and sophomore Abby Gooderham also found the back of the cage. Gooderham, junior Jessica Dembrowski, senior Antonia Tiedtke, sophomore Maddy Wray and freshman Sophie Hamilton each posted assists.
Auer notched her first career goal off an assist from Dembrowski at 8:04. Gooderham scored at 13:55 off a penalty corner opportunity.
In the second quarter, Boker finished a backhanded shot at 22:43, and the Huskies took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Auer notched her second goal of the game at 36:22. The Wildcats scored as time expired in the third quarter off a penalty corner.
Auer and Hamilton each made their first starts in their UConn debuts.
Goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher finished with three saves.
UConn led 18-7 in shots and 7-4 in penalty corners.
The Huskies have a quick turnaround as the face host and No. 21-ranked Stanford Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
