STORRS, Conn. - UConn Women Open Season at Minuteman Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the UMass cross country course. The Huskies will debut under new head coach Lindsay Crevoiserat.
"Preseason has gone really well and we're adding more miles and longer workouts so we are getting stronger," commented the head coach. "I think this first meet is to really see where everyone is and I expect them to be up front and run together but it's also a race where I want to see what they can do."
Crevoiserat, in her first season as a head coach, is a native of Glastonbury, Conn. and competed as a member of the UConn cross country and track and field programs. She is one of the most accomplished runners to come out of the State of Connecticut, and led the 2012 UConn cross country team to finish eighth in the country overall in addition to its first appearance in the NCAA Championship.
The Huskies will run against four other schools in host UMass, Boston College, Sacred Heart and WPI. The 5k race will step off at 11 am. "There are about five teams, so it's not a huge meet," commented Crevoiserat. "It's something where we'll be able to group together absolutely and then run together for most of it and try to see what they can do with that last mile."
UConn opened last season at this event and won with four runners finishing in the top-10. UConn junior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.), who was fifth at last year's UMass race, will be one of the Huskies top-returners this fall after an all-conference season last year. Nahom was UConn's top-finisher at the NCAA Northeast Regional (55th) and was All-AAC after earning a ninth place finish at the conference championship race.
"There's a few in the last few weeks that have been standing out and I'm excited to see," said Crevoiserat. "Randi Burr is a sophomore this year she is ready to start racing I think the same with Mia Nahom she's also put some good work in, so I think she'll be able to be up there. It is a big group so it's going to be an interesting race to see what they can do."
