The UConn Huskies head up to Boston on Saturday afternoon to close out their Hockey East season series with No. 12 nationally ranked Northeastern live on NESN.Â
UConn snapped a four-game losing streak and ended a five-game winless drought on Wednesday night when they erased a 2-0 deficit on the way to a 3-2 win over the Maine Black Bears at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport.
The Huskies dropped their first meeting this season with Northeastern, losing at home in the XL Center, 5-2, on January 3. UConn is 3-2-0 against Northeastern in their last five match-ups and since joining Hockey East in 2014-15, are 3-10-0.Â
After grabbing a pair of Hockey East points on Wednesday night, the Huskies enter the weekend tied with Boston University for sixth place in the standings with 12 points. Northeastern sits tied for second place in the league, tied with Massachusetts and UMass Lowell with 15 points.
After Saturday's match-up with the Huskies, UConn will get set to take part in the inaugural Connecticut Ice tournament next week at Webster Bank Arena. The Huskies will face Quinnipiac in the opening game of the tournament followed by Yale vs. Sacred Heart. All four games will be carried live on SNY.
Freshman Vladislav Firstov scored his seventh goal on the season, providing the game-winner in the third period against Maine. Firstov is tied for eighth among Hockey East rookies with 14 points on the season (7g/7a).
Sophomore Carter Turnbull is tied with Firstov for the team lead in goals scored after posting his seventh in Wednesday's win.Â
Sophomore goaltender Tomas Vomacka made 37 saves in Wednesday's win over Maine. After giving up two first period goals, Vomacka locked down the Black Bears the rest of the way including 16 stops in the final period.
Senior Benjamin Freeman is ranked fourth in Hockey East in face-off percentage, winning .598 percent (211-142) of his face-offs on the year.
Husky defensemen junior Adam Karashik and senior Wyatt Newpower are among the top shot blockers in Hockey East this season. Karashik is up to second in the league with 37 blocks, a 1.76 pg average. Newpower is now fourth having blocked 30 shots (1.36 pg).
This Season vs. Northeastern
January 3, 2020 - L, 5-2 - XL Center
The Huskies fell behind 3-0 in the first period on the way to a 5-2 Hockey East loss to the No. 12 nationally ranked Northeastern Huskies at the XL Center on January 3rd. Northeastern junior Zach Solow scored twice to help lead his team to a 5-0 lead late in the second period. Sophomore Tyler Madden scored a goal and picked-up an assist while freshman Aidan McDonough dished a pair of assists. NU put three on the board in the first period, the first coming just 30 seconds into the game from Matt Filipe and they never looked back. Northeastern was 1-for-3 on their power play chances and goaltender Craig Pantano stopped 26 shots to earn the win in goal. For UConn, sophomore Jonny Evans and freshman Vladislav Firstov scored the Huskies' goals. Firstov added an assist to his point total. The Huskies were 0-for-6 on the power play in the loss.
