STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's track and field team will head to New York City for the Columbia Challenge this weekend.
The annual event will feature teams from across the country as 20 programs will be represented at The Armory this weekend. The Huskies will face the likes of athletes from Columbia, Harvard, Brown, Syracuse, UAlbany, St. John's, Iona, Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson, Penn, Princeton, Penn State, Duke, South Carolina, Ohio State, BYU and UCLA, setting up a high level of competition at this year's meet.
How to Watch:
The first two-and-a-half days will be streamed on USATF.TV, with the first day's action of the heptathlon and pentathlon presented by USATF.TV On Demand. During the final day of competition, the day will begin on USATF.TV, but starting at noon, the broadcast will switch to NBC Sports Gold and the remainder of the event will be covered there.
"This is a great meet and it's kind of morphed over the years and gotten bigger with some out of region competition, it's fun," stated director of cross-country and track & field Greg Roy. "For our top-athletes, this is kind of a mid-term exam so to speak."
Last year's meet saw the Huskies grab twenty-two top-20 finishers and several athletes set personal bests. On the track, freshmen Shauntae Nelson and Katherine Mueck will compete in the 400 meter race along with sophomore Dejanee Parms and senior Kristina Cherrington. Junior Mia Nahom will run in the 3,000 meter race, while sophomore Shanelle Colmon is set to compete in the 200 meter race.
"For the women, we are looking for continued development. Mia (Nahom) is going to run fresh in the 3,000 and that will be a big deal. Our 4x400 will get a great look this weekend and Emma (Chee) is our school record holder now in the pole vault, so we are excited to see her this weekend."
In the field, sophomore Emma Chee looks to build off of last week's record-breaking attempt in the pole vault this weekend. Sophomore Mikyla Rodgers, also coming off of an impressive performance last time out, is set to compete in the weight throw.
