STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's hockey team gears up for a home-and-home series against Merrimack beginning with a home contest at the Freitas Ice Forum on Friday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. The Huskies travel to North Andover, Mass. on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m.
UConn (1-3-1) is coming off its best performance of the season, a 4-1 victory against No. 10 Boston University, last Friday in Storrs. With her goal and two assists in the contest, senior Natalie Snodgrass earned Hockey East Player of the Week honors. Freshman Tia Chan notched her first career victory in goal by making 21 saves.
Senior Savannah Bouzide continues to lead all of Hockey East with five goals on the season. Freshman Kate Klassen, who has scored in two of her last three games, is second in Hockey East with a .667 (20-30) win percentage in the face-off dot.
Merrimack enters this weekend with a 1-1 record after splitting a home-and-home series against Holy Cross last week. The Warriors had their first four games postponed due to Covid-19. Megan Fergusson leads Merrimack with two goals while Mack Emery leads the way with two assists. Goaltender Emma Gorski has played in each of the team's first two contests, posting a 2.51 GAA and making 67 saves.
The all-time series leans the way of UConn with a 9-5-2 record against the Warriors. Last season the Huskies went 2-1 vs. Merrimack. UConn won in overtime, 4-3, in North Andover in October and then split a two-game set in Storrs in February. Snodgrass led the way for the Huskies with four goals in the three matchups including the game-winner in overtime.
Hockey East also announced this week that all eligible teams in both the men's and women's leagues will qualify for their respective 2021 Hockey East Tournament. Additionally, all games played by Hockey East teams in 2020-21 will count toward the final standings used to determine tournament seeding, including all games previously played under the "Flex Game" designation, a change from the previously announced double-round robin format.
