BSB Drops Opening Day Contest to Cal Poly, 5-0
2/14/2020 7:26:00 PM | Baseball
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Three errors and just two hits for offense led to a 5-0 defeat for the UConn baseball team against Cal Poly on Opening Day at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.
Junior starting pitcher Joe Simeone was strong for the Huskies with four solid innings of work, allowing just three hits and striking out six. Two costly errors in the infield along with a foot off the bag on a potential inning-ending double play ball led to a pair of runs for the Mustangs in the third and elevated Simeone's pitch count.Â
UConn turned to senior right-hander Kenneth Haus who dominated in three hitless innings of work.
The UConn offense threatened in the first and the fifth innings with runners at first and second but were unable to bring any runs across. The Huskies went down in order in the other seven opportunities at the dish.
The Huskies look to rebound tomorrow against No. 1/2 Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on MLB.com (video) and 91.7 FM WHUS (audio)
