BURLINGTON, Vt. – The UConn women's hockey team grabbed another road win Saturday afternoon, capturing a 4-2 victory at Vermont. With the win, the Huskies surpass last season's win total and improve to 15-12-2 overall, 12-8-2 in Hockey East play. The teams wrap up the season series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
Four different skaters notched goals for the Huskies, with Natalie Snodgrass, Catherine Crawley, Briana Colangelo and Emily Reid each finding the back of the net. Sophomore Samantha Carpentier-Yelle nabbed 30 saves on the afternoon and earned her seventh win of the season.
UConn struck for the first goal of the game at the 8:24 mark of the first period. Crawley scooped up the loose puck off a Colangelo faceoff win and flipped the puck ahead to Snodgrass. The junior raced up the ice, made a sharp cut and went forehand to put UConn ahead 1-0.
A power play goal from Theresa Schafzahl tied the game at 13:22, and the teams would go into the first intermission deadlocked at one.
It didn't take long for the Huskies to regain their lead over the Catamounts. Colangelo broke the tie with her 6th goal of the season. Claire Peterson fired a shot from left ice that was initially blocked but the freshman recovered the puck and sent it over to Colangelo. Colangelo skated around the back of the net and tallied a wrap-around goal to put UConn back in front at 5:14.
Crawley extended the Husky lead to 3-1 at the 9:08 mark. A deflected cross-ice pass from Snodgrass found its way onto the stick of Colangelo. The senior skated along the boards and delivered a centering pass out in front to Crawley who had a little bit of space and was able to bang one in off the far post.
The Catamounts scored off a turnover and cut the UConn lead to one following Schafzahl's second goal at 3:08. The Huskies made an immediate response and regained a two-goal with their fourth at 5:04.
Viki Harkness made a great play to get inside Catamount skater Sini Karjalainen and pulled it back against the grain and was able to center one out from behind the net that Reid put into the top corner, pinching it in from the point to give the Huskies a 4-2 advantage.
