STORRS, Conn. – Led by its highest offensive output of the season, the UConn field hockey team coasted past Boston University, 8-0, Sunday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
Freshman Sophia Ugo was a force on the field, netting her first career hat trick, while five other Huskies found the back of the net. Sophomore Morgan Kauffmann also had a highlight day, providing three assists to go with one goal.
The eight-goal gap marked the largest margin of victory against Boston University (2-10, 0-3 Patriot League) in the 44-game series.
Following a scoreless opening period, Ugo weaved past a trio of defenders to get UConn (7-7, 3-1 BIG EAST) on the board in the 23rd minute, and followed by tipping in a feed from sophomore Morgan Kaufmann to make a a two-goal game heading into the break.
Junior McKenna Sergi kept the momentum of UConn's side to start the third period, working down the baseline before 5-holing to BU keeper just over a minute into the frame. After providing a pair of assists on the opening goals, Kaufmann got on the board at the 35-minute mark to push the advantage to 4-0.
Graduate student Jessica Dembrowski and freshman Madi Herb went for back-to-back goals in the 41st and 42nd minute, putting the rout on as four goals in the period extended UConn's grip to 6-0.
Ugo and junior Claire Jandewerth put the finishing touches on the afternoon, adding two more tallies in the fourth.
UConn will resume BIG EAST play as it visits Villanova on Friday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.
