STORRS, Conn. – Working its late-game magic once again, the UConn women's soccer team earned a dramatic 1-0 victory in double overtime against Villanova Sunday afternoon at Morrone Stadium.
Sophomore Jada Konte provided the golden goal in the 106th minute, finishing off a transition sequence with sophomore Jaydah Bedoya and senior Duda Santin.
UConn (8-6, 4-3 BIG EAST) posted a 28-15 advantage in shots over Villanova (7-9, 1-7 BIG EAST), and sophomore Kaitlyn Mahoney tabbed a nine-save effort in her second shutout of the season.
Bedova got an early look on frame in the 10th minute, weaving towards the top of the 18-yard box before lining a shot that just missed sneaking under the crossbar.
Working off a corner kick in the 29th minute, Villanova made the initial clear until sophomore Lucy Cappadona lofted the ball back into the box. Bedova quickly stroked a one-timer, but it arced over the net, and neither team could push anything past the goal line as the match remained scoreless at the break.
The Wildcats put the pressure on working in transition in the 53rd minute, though Mahoney left her post and deflected the shot from just outside the six-yard box.
Konte had a pair of chances within the box in the 66th minute, firing the first from left side that veered just wide of the far post, and the ensuing attempt from the right side was snatched up.
The Huskies outshot the Wildcats15-5 in the second half, but couldn't push one through as the match headed into overtime.
Junior Jessica Mazo nearly delivered the golden goal in the 99th minute, deking past a defender and ripping a shot from 10 yards out that Villanova's goalkeeper sprawled out for the save to force another overtime frame.
After blocking a Villanova free kick, Duda collected a loose ball at the center circle and pushed a feed down the sideline to Bedova, who drove the ball all the way down the field. Bedova laced a shot that ricocheted off the keeper, and Duda headed in the rebound for the game-winner.
UConn will return to the road on Thursday, Oct. 21 at Providence for a 6 p.m. start.
