Late Game Heroics Lift Huskies Over Seton Hall
10/20/2021 9:14:00 PM | Men's Soccer
South Orange, NJ – A goal in the 90th minute by sophomore Ben Awashie was the difference maker, as the University of Connecticut men's soccer team took down Seton Hall for the Huskies' second conference win of the season.
A very physical and defensive battle to start the game with neither team able to generate a shot on goal through the first 16 minutes of the match. Seton Hall's best scoring chance as well as the first scoring chance of the match came on a set piece in the 16th minute but was punched away by graduate student goalkeeper Jahmali Waite. UConn's best scoring chance came in the 32nd minute when senior Felix Metzler was left open at the top of the box and took the shot but sent it just high of the goal. Both teams would enter the half combining for a total of four shots, one shot on goal and nine total fouls.
UConn began the second half just where they left off in the first. Strong defense, and ball movement pressured the Seton Hall defense, but they were unable to break the tie. UConn had multiple crosses into the box throughout the second half but were unable to convert. A Seton hall free kick in the 68th minute was the best chance by either team, but the UConn defense held strong and deflected the kick out of bounds.
In the 84th minute of the second half, a Seton Hall breakaway was destined to break the tie but Jahmali Waite denied the attempt, as the game remained scoreless. Jahmali Waite would make two more saves to keep the game scoreless. In the 90th minute sophomore Ben Awashie would net a goal off a beautiful pass from freshman Mateo Leveque to break the tie and give UConn the lead 1-0.
That goal by the Huskies would be the difference maker as they take down Seton Hall 1-0 to get their second Big East Conference win of the season.
