STORRS, Conn. – With two lopsided victories under its belt, the No. 23 UConn men's basketball team returns to Gampel Pavilion Wednesday night to take on Long Island University. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. (FS2).
The Huskies (2-0), led by sophomore forward Adama Sanogo and a balanced scoring attack have dominated Central Connecticut and Coppin State, winning both games by an average margin of 43.0 points.
Sanogo has scored 20 points in each of the Huskies' first two games, while shooting an impressive .792 from the floor, hitting 19-of-24 shots, five of them slam dunks. Sanogo is getting plenty of support from his teammates, with four of them also averaging in double figures – guard R.J. Cole (15.5, guard Tyrese Martin (14.5), guard Jalen Gaffney (10.5) and forward Akok Akok (10.0).
Sophomore guard Andre Jackson leads the team in rebounding (7.5), while Gaffney is tops in assists (5.5).
As a team, UConn is shooting .529 overall and .419 from three-point range, while outrebounding opponents by 11.5 rebounds per game. The Huskies have also forced opponents into 26.0 turnovers per game, while only committing 12.5 themselves.
Long Island (0-2), out of the Northeast Conference, traveled to the West Coast to open its season, bowing to San Francisco and Fresno State. The Sharks are led by 6-9 graduate student Ty Flowers, a Waterbury, Conn., native, who tops the team in scoring (17.5) and rebounding (5.5). Forward Eral Penn (16.5) and guard Kyndall Davis (10.5) are also averaging in double figures.
The UConn-LIU series dates back to 1967-68, but the teams have only met four times in 54 years, each winning twice. The last meeting was an 84-69 UConn victory on Nov. 24, 1978, in the first round of the Charlotte Invitational Tournament.
