Huskies fall to Providence in a Shootout

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's hockey team fell to Providence in a shootout Friday night.
Graduate Student Natalie Snodgrass got UConn on the board early as she took the puck in the defensive zone and ended up scoring right in front. The Huskies didn't stop there as they continued to maintain possession and pepper the Providence goaltender with shots. The Huskies defense held strong as they limited Providence to only 2 shots through the first 10 minutes. The period would end with UConn outshooting Providence 14-5.
Providence would even the score early in the second on a breakaway. Following the Providence goal, both team's defenses would tighten up. Providence would continue to pressure the UConn defense with multiple breakaway attempts. Providence would take the lead late in the second period off a rebound right in front of the net. Huskies would respond almost immediately when a pass from sophomore Kathryn Stockdale was batted out of the air into the goal by junior Kate Thurman. The period would end with both teams tied at 2.
Providence would take the lead back early in the third period. UConn would struggle to create any real opportunities following the Providence goal. UConn would tie things up late in the third period when sophomore Alex-Anne Boyer would take the turnover and move through the defense and score.
Providence would have a chance to take the lead with 2 minutes left in the period when two UConn penalties would give them a 5-3 opportunity. UConn's defense lead by senior goaltender Samantha Carpentier-Yelle would kill of both penalties as the period would end tied at three.
Overtime would end tied as both teams head to a shootout. The Huskies would fail to score in the shootout and fall to Providence.
