CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The UConn baseball team opened the 2021 baseball season against No. 5/16 Virginia on the wrong side of a quality pitcher's duel.
Ben Casparius made his UConn debut on the mound and was solid for the Huskies with 5.2 innings of work, allowing just four hits, two earned, one walk and six strikeouts.
Sam Favieri and Kenneth Haus followed with 2.1 scoreless frames to give the Huskies a chance at a comeback.
Trailing 2-0 going into the seventh, 2 YR FR Reggie Crawford belted his first home run of the season, a solo shot, to get the Huskies within a run.
The Frackville, Pa. native recorded two of the Huskies three hits on Friday afternoon.
UConn threatened Virginia ace Andrew Abbott in the opening frame with two lengthy at-bats for Zach Bushling and Erik Stock that resulted in a single and walk to place two-on with none out. However a double play ball and strikeout ended the best threat of the day for UConn.
The Huskies will look to even the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. on the ACC Network
