MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The UConn women's lacrosse team never trailed on Sunday as senior Sydney Watson (Prince Fredrick, Md.) paced the offense with five goals on the way to an 18-13 win at Marquette, sweeping the weekend BIG EAST set with the Golden Eagles.
Watson finished with five goals and an assist and also won eight draws for the Huskies who improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST. Junior Lia LaPrise (Windsor, Conn.) followed up her six-goal game on Friday by matching her season-high of seven points, scoring three and assisting on four others.
For the second-straight outing, junior Grace Coon (Marcellus, N.Y.) put four goals on the board giving her 11 goals over her last three games. Freshman Lauren Barry (Wilbraham, Mass.) matched her season-high with three goals.
UConn took command right out of the gates, going up 2-0 in the first minute of the game on consecutive free position goals by sophomore Madelyn George (Rush, N.Y.) and Watson. The Huskies built their lead to 7-1 at the 13-minute mark and then led 10-4 at the half as Watson scored three of her five in the first 30 minutes.
The Huskies opened the second half with two-straight from LaPrise and sophomore Kate Shaffer (West Hartford, Conn.) as their lead hit the high-water mark of eight goals, 12-4. UConn had an answer for every Marquette rally in the second half, building their lead back up to eight goals three times.
After a three-goal rally pulled the Golden Eagles to within 15-10 with just over five to play, the Huskies answered with three-straight of their own off the sticks of Watson, twice, and Barry to put the game away up 18-10 with 2:16 left.
Defensively, UConn goaltender Landyn White (Alpharetta, Ga.) made 10 saves in cage.
The Huskies will stay on the road and play a two-game weekend set at BIG EAST foe Butler on March 26 and 28.
