Huskies Drop Big East Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UConn women's soccer team fell to Providence College 2-1 on Thursday afternoon. The Huskies fall to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in Big East play, while Providence improves to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
UConn opened the scoring in the 32nd minute thanks to an unassisted goal by senior Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky's (Chappaqua, N.Y.), her second of the season. Providence got an equalizer late in the half from Esther Ronn. UConn outshot the Friars 7-6 in the first half, with five shots on target.
The second half began with back-and-forth action and the teams deadlocked at 1-1. Providence took a 2-1 lead in the 72nd minute on a goal from Avery Snead. The Huskies were not able to find an equalizer and fell by a final score of 2-1.
The Friars outshot UConn 13-11, but the Huskies held a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Randi Palacios (Vienna, VA.) made four saves on the afternoon. Sophomore Jessica Mazo (Bridgeport, Conn.) and freshman Jaydah Bedoya (New Bedford, Mass.) led UConn with two shots on goal each.

UConn looks to bounce back as they head to Philadelphia for another Big East tilt with Villanova. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm on Sunday, March 7th.
