CINCINNATI, Ohio - The UConn baseball team has played some strange and crazy games during the 2021 season but Monday's 13-13 affair with Xavier University has been suspended after 11 innings due to darkness.
The two teams played for four hours and 55 minutes but the result could not be decided after the Huskies came back from a seven-run deficit in the eighth inning.
UConn plated a season-high nine runs in the eighth to take an 11-9 lead against the Musketeers. The Huskies sent 13 batters to the plate and Reggie Crawford delivered the go-ahead two-run double to give UConn its first lead of the day. The UConn first baseman had two doubles and three RBIs alone in the wild eighth inning.
Xavier fought back immediately with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie it back up at 11-11.Â
The two teams tossed scoreless ninth innings to send the game into extra innings. In extras, BIG EAST rules in 2021 have a runner being placed at second base to start each inning. The Huskies and Musketeers each plated a run each in the 10th and 11th innings.
Zach Bushling delivered an RBI double in the 10th while Crawford lined an RBI single into center in the 11th.Â
Caleb Wurster was able to keep the game tied in the 11th with a 2-4-3 double play that ended action because Hayden Field does not have lights and was too dark to complete a full inning.
The teams will resume the third game of the series at 10:30 a.m. in the 12th inning and play the series finale immediately after completion of the suspended game.
