Huskies Ready to Battle Virginia in NCAA Tournament

NCAA FIRST ROUND - FRIDAY, MAY 14 - 5:00 PM
- The UConn Huskies return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2013 season, earning an at-large bid into this year's field. The Huskies finished the season with a 12-6 overall record, finished second in the BIG EAST at 7-3, and advanced to the conference title game before falling to fellow NCAA Tournament team Denver.
- The Huskies will be matched up the Virginia Cavaliers from the ACC in the first round at Arlotta Stadium at the University of Notre Dame. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Huskies and Cavaliers.
- UVA enters the tournament ranked No. 11 in the latest IWLCA Coaches National Poll and 16th in the InsideLacrosse.com National Poll. The Huskies are currently receiving votes in the the InsideLacrosse.com poll. The Cavaliers finished 8-8 on the season and were 3-7 in the ACC, losing in the conference tournament quarterfinal to Boston College.
- The Huskies have only ever faced ACC members Boston College, North Carolina, and Syracuse but met Louisville, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech back when they were in the BIG EAST. UConn is 3-3 against BC and 0-4 against Syracuse as a members of the ACC and 0-1 against UNC.Â
- This is the program's second-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies last appearance came in 2013 when they earned an at-large big after a 13-4 regular season. UConn lost in the first round against No. 8 nationally ranked UMass, 14-10, at Penn State.
- The Huskies advanced to the BIG EAST title game for the second time in program history thanks to a 15-13 win over Georgetown last Thursday, the Huskies first-ever win over the Hoyas on the road in 12 trips to Washington, D.C. The win over the Hoyas was the Huskies 12th victory on the season, tying the school record for wins. They hit the 12 win mark in 2016 and 2005. Junior goaltender Landyn White has been the goaltender of record in all 12 wins, tying the school mark for goaltender wins (12 - Shannon Nee, 2016).
- UConn fell short of their first-ever BIG EAST Championship in a 13-7 loss to the top-seed Denver in the title game. Â
- UConn took home a pair of major post season awards as senior Sydney Watson was the unanimous winner of the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and head coach Katie Woods and her staff were named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. Woods and her staff also won the award in 2013 and 2015.
- Watson led the Huskies into the NCAA Tournament with 53 goals scored on the season, tops in the BIG EAST and 16th nationally. Over her 16 games, she has put up 53 goals and 12 assists and is ninth in the nation with 133 draw controls, an 8.31 per game average. Her 53 goals are the third highest single season total in Husky history.
- Watson has been named one of 25 nominees for the 2021 Tewaaraton Award, recognizing the top female college lacrosse player in the country.
- Junior attacker Lia LaPrise is the team's leading scorer with 76 points on the season, first in the BIG EAST and 16th in the nation. She has 36 goals and her 40 assists is 11th nationally. Her 40 assists is the second highest single season total and her 76 points are the fourth highest UConn total.
- Junior goaltender Landyn White has made 154 saves this season, ranking sixth in the NCAA.
SCOUTING THE VIRGINIA CAVALIERS...
- The Virginia Cavaliers finished their season at 8-8 overall and 3-7 in the ACC. UVA has lost six-straight heading in including an ACC Quarterfinals loss to Boston College, 16-12.
- UVA is led by Taylor Regan offensively who is one of four players with 30-plus points on the year. Regan has 36 points coming on 21 goals and 15 assists.
- Ashley McGovern is the team's top-goal scorer with 31 on the season with Lillie Kloak right on her heels with 30 goals. Â
- Charlie Campbell has seen the majority of minutes in goal this season, playing in all 16 games with a 13.61 goals against average and 136 saves.
