Huskies Top Holy Cross, 3-1

HANOVER, N.H. – Starting off the first of three games at the Dartmouth Invitational, the UConn volleyball team (4-3) defeated Holy Cross in four sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-23, 25-18) Friday evening at Leede Arena.
Senior Caylee Parker's and junior Jasmine Davis each posted double-doubles, as Parker notched 13 kills and digs apiece, while Davis logged 13 kills and a team-best 18 digs.
Junior Allie Garland also reached double-digit kills with 11, while sophomore Taylor Pannell went for a team-high .400 hitting percentage and nine kills, and graduate student McKayla Wuensch recorded 29 assists.
UConn found its stride early on, starting the match with a 5-1 run. Holy Cross fought back to trim UConn's edge to 16-14 midway through the opening set until Wuensch assisted five straight kills to swing the momentum as UConn took the set.
Holy Cross struggled with a .087 hitting percentage in the second frame, while UConn posted a .381 swing mark to coast to a 10-point victory. In the following set, the Huskies gave away 11 points on attacking or service errors, and neither team could push its lead beyond two points as the Crusaders extended the match.
The fourth set saw both teams continue the back-and-forth pace as Holy Cross eked out a 15-13 edge at the halfway point. The Huskies turned the switch on once again as Garland kicked off a 7-1 streak to pull ahead, and an ace from Wuensch capped a 3-0 run to close out the game.
UConn will be back in action with two more games as part of the Dartmouth Invitational tomorrow. The Huskies will start with a 1 p.m. contest vs. New Hampshire before taking on the host at 5:30 p.m.
