STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore Jayden Reid put on a show, tallying a goal and three assists, as the UConn men's soccer team defeated Yale 4-0 on Tuesday night at Morrone Stadium. The Huskies improve to 3-1 on the season.
"I just wanted to find a way to help my team tonight," said Reid. "When I got my chance to get in, I wanted to just get forward and make something happen. Tonight was a great win, but going forward we have to stay focused, do the right things, and the results will come."
The Huskies were on the back foot from in the opening 10 minutes. A giveaway at the top of the box led to a half chance for the Bulldogs, but graduate student Jahmali Waite jumped off his line to grab the loose ball. UConn's first chance came in the 11th minute when freshman Okem Chime's shot went wide of net.
In the 24th minute, following freshman Mateo Leveque's corner, fellow freshman Bjorn Nikolajewski's back post effort hit the post and was cleared by the Yale defense. Junior Ahdan Tait had the Huskies' first attempt on target in the 29th minute, but the shot was stopped.
UConn would take the lead in the 33rd minute, as Jayden Reid whipped in a curling cross from the left side of the field and senior Dom Laws found the back of the net with a floating header into the top corner for his first goal of the season.
Freshman Scott Testori doubled the UConn lead in the 38th minute, tucking away a close-range effort for his first career collegiate goal. Jayden Reid recorded his second assist of the half on Testori's tally. The Huskies would take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
"I've dreamt about scoring my first goal for UConn, so it's a really great feeling," said Testori. "Jayden [Reid] got it down the line and I was waiting for it. He gave me a great pass and I was able to finish it off."
In the second half, UConn picked up right where they left off in the first half, with another quality opportunity coming in the 50th minute. Jayden Reid cut back on the right side of the field and his left footed effort rattled off the crossbar and stayed out, nearly giving UConn a three-goal lead. Reid would get his goal just moments later in the 54th minute, slotting home a calm finish from a feed from sophomore Moussa Wade.
The Huskies kept possession and dominated the play of the game, limiting Yale to just four shots and only one shot on goal 70 minutes into the game. UConn would add a fourth goal to Tuesday's tally, as Jayden Reid picked up his third assist of the night, finding freshman Giancarlo Vaccaro open at the back post for an easy finish in the 81st minute. The Huskies would win the game 4-0.
Following a hard-fought victory over Monmouth, the Huskies showed out Tuesday night with a dominating performance over Yale. With Butler up next in a Big East road matchup, UConn is looking forward to the next challenge.
"I think we are really excited for it [game against Butler]," said Testori. "We want to make a statement this year and we are feeling good. There's still work to do, and we will take it one game at a time."
Jahmali Waite earned his second straight clean sheet, and third of the season.
