STORRS, Conn. – Casey Handrahan has been elevated to Associate Head Coach of the UConn women's hockey program, as announced by head coach Chris MacKenzie on Tuesday.
"We are lucky to have had Casey on our staff the past 8 seasons. He makes everything around him better," said MacKenzie.
Handrahan has been an important part of the team's success and is now entering his ninth season with the Huskies in 2021-2022. Handrahan helped lead the Huskies to one of their most successful seasons in program history in 2019-20, racking up 19 wins, tying for third-most in program history.
"Everyone respects his knowledge, passion and drive to improve our program. This is a much deserved acknowledgement of the contribution Casey has made to our program."
UConn advanced all the way to the Hockey East Championship with a road series win at Boston College in the Hockey East Quarterfinals, followed by a win vs. New Hampshire in the Hockey East Semi's. UConn set a program record in 2019-20 with 12 road wins.
The Huskies also tied a program-record with 13 wins in Hockey East play, matching the 2007-08 team's win total. UConn also reached the Hockey East championship game for the third time in program history during the 2017-18 campaign, including an upset win over No. 3 Boston College in the semifinals. Handrahan helped UConn in its late-season run, going 9-3-1 in its last 13 games.
"I'm obviously flattered that the staff have the confidence in me to have this title, but it doesn't change the work ethic," said Handrahan.
"If anything, this motivates me more to be more dialed in for our players, give more back to our athletes and the university. I've had a great time here at UConn and I want to continue to instill that pride that the entire athletic department has. There's a pride of UConn as a whole, not just each program here, so I want to continue that. I'm very happy, obviously, but not satisfied yet. We have so much more to accomplish and I'm looking forward to getting back to work with the team."
