HARTFORD, Conn. – Boston University's Jay O'Brien scored eight seconds into the overtime to give the visiting Terriers a 2-1 win over the UConn Huskies Friday night from the XL Center.
The Huskies get one Hockey East point on the night and see their record come even at 9-9-0 overall and move to 6-5-0 in the league. BU remains unbeaten in their last seven (6-0-1) with the win and take the extra point as they move to 10-9-3 and 6-5-3 in the league.
BU's Matt Brown gave his team a 1-0 lead at 17:10 in the first period and the Terriers carried that into the third. UConn found the tying goal at the 13:00 minute mark as freshman Chase Bradley (St. Louis, Mo.) scored his second of the season.
Right off the face-off in overtime, BU got a 2-on-1 chance and O'Brien kept it and buried his shot for the game-winner just eight seconds in.
UConn goaltender Darion Hanson (East Bethel, Minn.) made 26 saves including a pair of highlight reel stops in the second period. The Huskies killed off all four BU power plays in the loss.
BU netminder Drew Commesso made 25 saves to earn the win. The Terriers held a 28-26 shot edge.
1st Period:
Both teams came up empty on their first power play chances of the night but BU made it a 1-0 game into the locker room with the first goal of the night at 17:10. Creating a turnover in the neutral zone, BU got a rush into the zone with Ethan Phillips leaving the puck for Brown who split UConn defenders and buried a backhander under the bar past Hanson, his fifth of the year.
2nd Period:
The game held at 1-0 in the second period thanks in big part to Uconn's Hanson who came up with a pair of incredible stops. Just after a BU power play ended, Cade Webber got a cross ice pass and had a one-timer chance on an empty net but Hanson just got his leg extended to made the pad stop with 3:33 left.
In the closing seconds of the period, BU's Jay O'Brien sprung free for a break-away chance with 20 seconds on the clock, but Hanson slammed the door and kept the game 1-0 heading to the third.
