SB knocks off #10 Missouri during opening day split

LEESBURG, Fla. – Huskies split doubleheader on first day of Northern Lights Tournament, taking down ranked Missouri Tigers.
In the first game of Friday's doubleheader the Huskies took down ranked Missouri Tigers. Starting pitcher Marybeth Olson led the way pitching 5.2 innings, and only giving up 5 hits to the potent Missouri lineup. She got the win as freshman Elise Sokolsky came in to close the game out for the Huskies. The Tigers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off the bat of Jenna Laird.
The Huskies answered right back in the bottom half of the third scraping a run across of their own. Aziah James led off the inning with a walk, followed by an infield single by Briana Marcelino. Aggressive baserunning paid off for the Huskies as they pulled off a double steal to get their first run of the game.
The Huskies took the lead in the fourth off the bat of Erika Coreth. She plated Sami Barnett on a bloop single to right field. Lexi Hastings and Jana Sanden continued the Huskies rally scoring 2 runners with a pair of singles making it 4-1 after 4 innings. The Huskies stole another run in the 5th with the aggressive base running of Sami Barnett making the score 5-1.
The Tigers got a run back in the sixth, but the Huskies answered right back with a run off the bat of Sami Barnett making it 6-2 UConn which was the final result giving UConn their first win of the 2022 season.
In the second game of Friday's doubleheader the Huskies lost to Big Ten power Northwestern. Freshman Elise Sokolsky started the game on the mound pitching 4 innings, with 3 strikeouts. Junior Meghan O'Neil came in relief. Northwestern took an early 2-0 lead in the first 2 innings. The Wildcats then plated 4 runs in the fourth with a grand slam from Rachel Lewis making the score 6-0. Northwestern went on to tack on 2 more runs in the fifth which was the final score of the game.
The Huskies look forward to a pair of Big Ten matchups tomorrow, where they will face Michigan State at 1:00pm and Penn State at 4:00pm.
