SB splits pair of Big Ten matchups on second day of Northern Lights Tournament

LEESBURG, Fla – Huskies split a pair of Big Ten matchups on day 2, walk it off against Penn State.
In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader the Huskies lost to the Michigan State Spartans 6-0. Freshman Elise Sokolsky started the game for the Huskies pitching 1.1 innings giving up 5 runs. Freshman Delaney Nagy came in relief for her first appearance of the 2022 season. She pitched a solid 4.2 innings, only giving up 2 hits and notched 2 strikeouts under her belt. The Spartans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of singles.
Michigan State tacked on 3 more runs in the second making it 5-0 Spartans. They got another in the fifth to put the game away at 6-0.
In the second game of the day, the Huskies took on the Penn State Nittany Lions. Junior Meghan O'Niel started on the mound for the Huskies pitching a solid 6 innings shutting down the Penn State lineup. Elise Sokolsky came in relief pitching 1 inning. She was credited with the win in the contest. Stellar defense led the way for the Huskies in the win as they did not record an error in the game.
Sophomore Giuliana Abruscato sparked the Huskies offense in the second inning with her first home run of the 2022 campaign giving UConn a 1-0 lead. Senior Aziah James kept the Huskies in front with a tremendous home run robbing catch in the fifth.
Penn State answered in the sixth inning with an RBI triple off the bat of Lilia Crouthamel to tie the game at 1. O'Neil was able to shut the door on the Nittany Lions getting out of the jam in the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh Jana Sanden got on for the Huskies with a walk. Freshman Lexi Hastings had the game winning hit for the Huskies scoring pinch runner Hollis Wivell in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single to left field.
The Huskies move to 2-2 on the year after Saturday's doubleheader at the Northern Lights Tournament. They will look to close out the weekend with a win against Big Ten foe Wisconsin tomorrow at 9:00am.
