NEW YORK – The UConn men's basketball team completes a two-game road trip, as well as a difficult stretch of four games in nine days, three of them on the road, when it takes on St. John's on Sunday at noon at Madison Square Garden (FOX).
The No. 24/23 Huskies (16-7 overall, 7-5 BIG EAST), who lost a tough, physical battle at Xavier, 74-68, on Friday night, will be meeting St. John's (13-10, 5-7) for the second time this season. UConn captured an 86-78 decision in overtime over the Red Storm on Jan. 12 at Gampel Pavilion.
UConn and St. John's have a 65-game history, with the Red Storm holding a 36-29 overall advantage. They have met at Madison Square Garden 24 times, with St. John's winning 13 of those games.
The Huskies mounted numerous second-half threats at Xavier, cutting the Musketeers' lead to three, but could not quite catch the home team. UConn was led by a combined 40 points by grad student R.J. Cole (22) and senior Tyrese Martin (18). Sopomore Adama Sanogo added 11 points for the Huskies.
Cole is UConn's top scorer (16.3) and also the leader in assists (4.4), while Sanogo is the second-leading scorer (15.2) and the rebounding leader (8.3). Martin completes UConn's double-figure scorers (13.7) and they make up the highest-scoring trio in league games.
St. John's, which has been off since a 75-69 loss to Villanova on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, has a high-scoring trio of its own with forward Julian Champagnie (17.1), guard Posh Alexander (14.0) and forward Aaron Wheeler (13.9). St. John's boasts the highest-scoring team in the BIG EAST (79.3) and also leads the league in assists, steals, turnover margin and assist/turnover ratio.
Following Sunday's game, UConn will finally return home for a three-game stretch – hosting Seton Hall on Feb. 16 and Xavier on Feb. 19, both at Gampel Pavilion, and Villanova on Feb. 22 at the XL Center.
