Softball looks to build on opening weekend

Charlotte, NC – The UConn Softball team prepares for the Charlotte Invitational this upcoming weekend.
The Huskies are coming off their opening weekend with a 2-3 record, with wins over top ranked Missouri and Big Ten foe Penn State. Senior Briana Marcelino led the way for the Huskies at the plate while Senior Marybeth Olson and Junior Meghan O'Neil had an impressive weekend in the circle. The Huskies will look to build on their first tournament this weekend in Charlotte.
The UConn Huskies will kick off the Charlotte Invitational on Friday, February 18th with a pair of matchups against the host school Charlotte 49ers, and the Campbell Fighting Camels.
The Huskies will play Charlotte at 2:00pm. The 49ers have a 6-1 record on the season so far. They bring a lot of pop with the bats and speed on the basepaths. They are led by Senior catcher Bailey Vannoy. The game will be available to watch HERE on ESPN+.
The Huskies will play Campbell right after their game with Charlotte at 5:00pm. Campbell have a 3-1 record this year. The Fighting Camels have a young roster led by Redshirt Sophomore pitcher Georgeanna Barefoot who holds an impressive 2-0 record with a 0.00 era on the season.
The Huskies will close out the Charlotte Invitational with back-to-back matchups with the James Madison Dukes. The Dukes are coming off a trip to the College World Series last year boasting a 41-4 record. JMU returns much of their lineup from last year. The Huskies will be the first matchup for the Dukes on the year. UConn holds a 2-0 record all time against JMU beating them twice in the 2020 season. They will play on Saturday, February 19th at 11:00am and then Sunday, February 20th at 10:00am.
