SB takes one of two on first day of Charlotte Invitational

CHARLOTTE, NC – UConn dominates Campbell, splits Friday doubleheader at Charlotte Invitational.
In the first game of the Charlotte Invitational the Huskies fell to the Charlotte 49ers, 8-0. Marybeth Olson started the game for the Huskies pitching two innings giving up four runs on five hits. Elise Sokolsky came in relief in the third inning. She went two innings and gave up four runs on four hits.
The 49ers had the game's first run on a bloop single to right in the second inning. Olson was able to get out of the jam stranding two runners in scoring position. Charlotte struck again in the third plating five runs on three hits and two errors making it 6-0. The 49ers would go on to tack on two more runs in the fourth making it a final score of 8-0.
In the second game of the day the Huskies bats came to life beating the Campbell Fighting Camels in six innings. Meghan O'Neil started the game pitching a solid five innings keeping the Campbell hitters at bay. Freshman, Delaney Nagy made her second appearance on the year coming in relief for O'Neil. She pitched one inning, striking out two batters.
Campbell jumped out to an early 2-0 lead off the bat of Sterling Hairston in the first inning. The Huskies answered right back in the bottom half of the first with five runs of their own. Sophomore, Jana Sanden drove in two runs on a double to left center. Olivia Sappington delivered the big blow with a three-run homer to right center field, her first on the year. This gave the Huskies a 5-2 lead after one inning of play.
Sami Barnett joined the hit party with her first home run of the year in the third inning making it 6-2 Huskies. Freshman Rosie Garcia drove in senior Briana Marcelino with a base hit to left field giving the Huskies a 7-2 lead in the fourth. Sanden scored on a bases loaded walk to Sappington giving UConn an 8-2 lead. The Huskies would tack on another in the fifth thanks to the aggressive base running of Aziah James on an error making it 9-2. James would later deliver the game sealing hit in the sixth on a double to left center giving the Huskies a 10-2 win.
UConn will play James Madison tomorrow at 11:00am.
