GLENCOE, Md. - In a top 25-matchup, No. 13 James Madison got the best of the No. 23 UConn women's lacrosse team, 13-7, Saturday afternoon at Tierney Field.
Senior Lia LaPrise paced the attack with a pair of assists and one goal, while fellow senior Grace Coon notched a team-best two scores. Senior Gillian Haverty was a force on the defensive end, leading the team in ground balls (5) and caused turnovers (3).
Coon and LaPrise combined for three goals in just over a minute early in the opening quarter. However, James Madison answered with its own 3-0 run before taking its first lead to start the second frame.
Junior Madelyn George got hte Huskies back on track as she tied it up at 4-all, but the Dukes ripped another 3-0 spurt to regain the upper hand. With two seconds left in the half, junior Kyra Place found the back of the net to trim the deficit to 7-5 heading into the break.
James Madison held the Huskies scoreless in the third quarter as they tallied four more goals to pull away. Junior Sophie Sorenson and senior Sydney Watson added scores in the fourth, but it was not enough as UCoon suffered its first setback of the season.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. for their home opener against UMass Lowell.
