BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Connecticut women's hockey team would fall in a shootout to Boston University Friday Night. Senior Viki Harkness was the lone goal scorer for the Huskies.
The first period began with Boston University instantly jumping on the attack. The Terriers would dominate the possession of the puck early in the game putting pressure on the UConn defense. The Huskies would eventually settle in and pressure the Terriers defense with puck possession in the offensive zone. UConn would eventually draw a penalty to put them on the power play, however strong goaltending play by Boston would prevent the Huskies from scoring. The Terriers looked destined to get on the board first when a Husky turnover resulted in a two on one, but the Terriers shot would ring off the post. UConn's best chance of the period came on a shot by graduate student Morgan Wabick that would bounce right to senior Danielle Fox who would be unable to backhand a bouncing puck into the net. Both teams would head into the break scoreless.
The second period would start out with Boston University controlling the game. The terriers would continue to dominate puck possession and fire pucks at senior goaltender Samantha Carpentier-Yelle. UConn however would be the first team to break the stalemate as senior Viki Harkness would score her 11 goal of the season on a shot that would go right over the Boston goaltender. Shortly after on a UConn powerplay, the Terriers would recover the puck off a UConn turnover and score on the shorthanded breakaway to tie the game at one. With time running down in the period UConn would look to take the lead but a sprawling kick save by the Boston goaltender as the period ended would keep the game tied.
The third period would continue with the trend of the game. Boston would jump out on the attack and pressure the UConn defense. UConn would respond and prevent a goal and use that momentum to create pressure of their own. Neither team would be able to score in the final frame as the game would head to overtime. UConn would start the overtime period on the power play giving them the four on three player advantage.
In the overtime period graduate student Natalie Snodgrass would score however the refs blew the play dead thinking the puck was covered up by the Boston goaltender. Following the faceoff both teams would be unable to generate any scoring chances as the game would head to a shootout. UConn would fall in the shootout.
