STORRS, Conn. - UConn seniors Jonny Evans (North Delta, British Columbia) and Carter Turnbull (Naniamo, British Columbia) have signed amateur tryout contracts with the South Carolina Stingrays, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Washington Capitals and the AHL's Hershey Bears.
The duo have been teammates since their time playing for the Powell River Kings in the BCHL before spending the last four seasons in Storrs with the Huskies. Evans played 106 games for the Huskies and finished his career with 79 points on 37 goals and 42 assists. He was a +12 over his four years, had nine game-winning goals, three career hat-tricks, and defensively, blocked 53 shots. Â
This year, Evans scored six goals, four game-winners, and nine assists. During his junior season, he had 29 points, scoring 14 goals with 15 assists, was a +9 and had two power play goals and a short handed goal. He was named a CCM / ACHA second team All-American, becoming the first Husky in the Division I era (1998-present) to garner All-American honors. He was also a finalist for Hockey East Player of the Year, named a HEA First Team All-Star and was the PNC Ban Three-Stars Award winner and the league's scoring champion.
After serving as an assistant captain in 2020-21, Turnbull put the "C" on his jersey this season and helped lead the Huskies to one of the best seasons in program history. UConn finished with 20 wins for the first time since the 1998-99 season, and advanced to the Hockey East championship game for the first time in program history.
Turnbull finished the season playing in all 36 games, scoring 11 goals with four assists. He was a +2 on the year and had a pair of power play goals. Over his four-year career at UConn, Turnbull played in 122 games scoring 34 goals with 25 assists for 59 points. Â
