No. 22 UConn Tops Hofstra for 7th-Straight Win

STORRS, Conn. - UConn junior Kate Shaffer (West Hartford, Conn.) scored five goals and senior Grace Coon (Marcellus, N.Y.) chipped in four to lead the No. 22 nationally ranked Huskies to a 15-11 win over visiting Hofstra Saturday afternoon at Joseph J. Morrone Field.
The Huskies win their seventh-straight game as they improve to 8-1 overall on the season. The Hofstra Pride fall to 6-4 with the loss.
UConn had a 6-3 lead at the 8:15 mark in the 2nd quarter but Hofstra would put together a three-goal rally on the way to outscoring the Huskies 4-1 into the break to pull the game even at 7-7 at the half. Coon scored three of her four goals on the day in the first half. The second half belonged to UConn as the Huskies won the third quarter, 4-1 and built their lead to 14-9 with 6:16 left in the fourth on the strength of four of Shaffer's five goals on the afternoon. Â
UConn senior Sydney Watson (Prince Frederick, Md.) had a goal and an assist but two first half yellow cards took the Huskies' leading scorer out of the game with 5:14 left in the second quarter. Shaffer scored the first two goals of the second half and the Huskies never looked back. Sophomore Susan Lafountain (Rochester, N.Y.) scored twice, her second starting a three-goal rally that Shafer ended with the first goal of the fourth quarter to put UConn up 12-8.
Husky senior goaltender Landyn White (Alpharetta, Ga.) made a stop on free position shot that led to a Morgan Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) goal at the other end at 9:19 and Coon followed with her fourth of the day at 6:16 to give UConn their biggest lead of the day at 14-9 in the fourth.
White would finish with 12 saves in the win s the Huskies held a 39-30 shot edge and forced 16 Hofstra turnovers.
Hofstra got two goals and three assists from Katie Whelan and a four goal effort from Kerry Walser in the loss. Goaltender Jess Smith stopped 14 for the Pride.
UConn returns to action on Wednesday, March 30 hosting Columbia at 3 pm.
