STORRS, Conn. – The No. 21 nationally ranked UConn women's lacrosse team posted a 20-8 win over visiting Columbia University Wednesday afternoon at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The Huskies eighth-straight win is the longest winning streak in program history.
UConn improves to 9-1 overall on the season and will open BIG EAST play on Saturday hosting Marquette.
Junior Kate Shaffer (West Hartford, Conn.) scored five goals and added two assists to pace the Husky offense. Senior Lia LaPrise (Winidsor, Conn.) scored twice and registered her 100th career goal in the win. Senior Sydney Watson (Prince Frederick, Md.) broke her own school record for draw controls in a game with 19 on Wednesday.
Watson and sophomore Susan Lafountain (Rochester, N.Y.) each scored three goals for the Huskies. Senior goaltender Landyn White (Alpharetta, Ga.) made 16 saves in the cage.
The Huskies opened the game scoring the first five goals, with Palmucci getting the first two as UConn led 4-0 after the first. Sophomore Madelyn George (Rush, N.Y.) capped the five-goal run at the start of the second before the Lions answered to claw back in it.
Columbia scored three-straight to pull within 5-3 but UConn closed the second quarter on a 5-1 run. Shaffer capped off her first-half hat-trick on the run and sophomore Susan Lafountain (Rochester, N.Y.) capped the rally with her second with 27 seconds left to send UConn to the locker room up 10-4.
The Lions were able to get within 11-6 early in the third quarter but the Huskies closed out the quarter with another 5-1 run with five different Huskies finding the back of the goal to pull away for good.
The Huskies close out their three-game homestand on Saturday against the Golden Eagles with opening draw scheduled for 12 noon.
