STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's basketball team wraps up the 2021-22 regular season on Saturday with Senior Day at Gampel Pavilion against DePaul. Senior Day ceremonies are set to begin at 4:45 p.m., with game time set for 5:07 (FOX).
Grad students Tyler Polley, Isaiah Whaley and R.J. Cole, as well as seniors Tyrese Martin and Matt Garry and their families will be honored before an expected sellout crowd at Gampel.
While the No. 18/19 Huskies (21-8 overall, 12-6 BIG EAST) have already secured a bye through the first round of next week's BIG EAST Tournament, whether they will be the No. 3 or No. 4 seed will be determined by Saturday's league games.
If UConn is the No. 3 seed, it will play its quarterfinal game at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday against an opponent determined by Wednesday's first round. As the No. 4 seed, UConn would play the No. 5 seed (Marquette or Seton Hall) at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday.
UConn comes into the game against DePaul on the heels of a 64-62 road loss at Creighton that broke the Huskies' five-game winning streak. UConn fought back from a 16-point, first-half deficit to tie the game twice in the second half, but couldn't take the lead and the homestanding Bluejays prevailed.
Cole, who has 20 points against Creighton, his eighth 20-point game of the season, leads the Huskies in scoring (16.2) and assists (4.2). Sophomore Adama Sanogo, who has been named as a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award, is UConn's leading rebounder (8.5) and second-leading scorer (14.8), while Martin also averages in double-figures.
DePaul (15-14, 6-13) is one of the hottest teams in the BIG EAST at the moment, riding a three-game winning streak. The Blue Demons have the league's top scorer in senior guard Javon Freeman-Liberty (21.9) and is also the team's leading rebounder (7.5). DePaul's other offensive weapons include sophomore David Jones (14.7) and grad Brandon Johnson (10.4). They form the highest-scoring trio in the BIG EAST.
DePaul, which is 4-7 on the road this year, is fighting to get out of 11th place in the league and make its mark in next week's league tourney.
UConn has been tough at home (13-2) this season, especially at Gampel Pavilion (7-0). The Huskies will be gunning for the 10th undefeated season in the history of Gampel, but the first since 2008-09.
