MIAMI - The UConn baseball team (6-1) scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning to cap a 4-2 series opening win at FIU on Friday night from the FIU Baseball Stadium.

Ben Huber and David Smith each delivered RBI singles in the ninth inning to lift the Huskies to their fifth-straight victory.

The ballgame hung in the balance in the bottom of the seventh inning with FIU loading the bases with no outs in a 2-2 game.

Freshman Ian Cooke came out of the UConn bullpen and recorded a strikeout to open his outing. The New Milford, Conn. then got a shallow fly out to right field that UConn right fielder Casey Dana hauled in and gunned to potential go-ahead run at the plate to end the Panther's threat.

Cooke earned his second victory of the year with his 2.0 shutout innings of work. Justin Willis notched his second save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.

Austin Peterson logged a quality start with 6.0 innings of work that saw the Chesterton, Ind. native record his third-straight double digit strikeout game of the season.

Huber led the way for the UConn offense with a three-hit game that included his first career extra base hit. Erik Stock registered a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.

UConn looks to secure a series win on Saturday at 6 p.m. with Pat Gallagher taking the mound for the Huskies.
