Softball set for doubleheader against Saint Joe's on Saturday

Storrs, CT – UConn welcomes the Saint Joseph's Hawks for a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday.
The Huskies (33-14) are coming off a midweek win over Boston College and a series sweep of Seton Hall last weekend. UConn is currently in first place in the BIG EAST standings with an 18-3 conference record this season. The Huskies have a chance to clinch the regular season BIG EAST title this weekend pending the results of other action around the BIG EAST this weekend. UConn has been red hot winning 15 of their last 16 games. In those 16 games the Huskies have a collective .303 batting average, scoring 112 runs, with 34 extra base hits.
UConn has been a problem for opposing teams on the basepaths all season. They currently rank second in the NCAA with 117 stolen bases on the season. The Huskies are a threat to run every time they get on. They are led by a trio at the top of the order in Briana Marcelino, Reese Guevarra, and Lexi Hastings. All three have broken the previous single season stolen base record set by Jen Ward in 2012 with 25. Marcelino leads the trio with 34 stolen bases, followed by Hastings with 28, and Guevarra with 26.
The pitching staff has found their groove in conference play. They currently lead the BIG EAST in strikeouts with 319 this season. In this 16 game stretch, the staff holds a 1.83 era, with 133 strike outs, and are holding opposing batters to a .195 batting average. The Huskies have a three headed monster in Elise Sokolsky, Marybeth Olson, and Meghan O'Neil. Sokolsky currently leads the BIG EAST in wins with 19, and strikeouts with 152. The three will look to continue their dominance through the final five games of the regular season.
Saint Joseph's (19-20) are coming off a win at Lehigh in the midweek. The Hawks are led by senior Jordan Hinkle who leads the Hawks with a .333 batting average, 46 hits, and 20 runs batted in.
The first game of the doubleheader is set for noon on Saturday. The second game will follow the completion of the first game. The game will be a special Bark in the Park game where fans will be able to bring dogs into the stadium to enjoy the game. Fans are encouraged to bring non extendable leashes and a copy of their rabies vaccine. Wings of Freedom Animal Rescue will also be in attendance with puppies available for adoption.
