WSOC Wins BIG EAST Opener at Creighton, 2-1

OMAHA - The UConn women's soccer team (5-2-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) captured a 2-1 victory at Creighton to start BIG EAST play on Thursday night at Morrison Stadium.
Cara Jordan scored the game-winning goal at 84:38 after Jada Konte forced a turnover deep in the Creighton end. Konte stole the ball on a pass from the goalkeeper that was intended for a Bluejays defender, the UConn forward then raced past the defender and fed a wide open Jordan in the center of the box.
It was the first goal of the season for Jordan while Konte notched her third assist of the year.
The Huskies game-winner came just two minutes and 34 seconds after Creighton had scored an equalizer and held momentum in the match.
Freshman Adyson Duran made her first career start in net and had a solid debut by making five saves on the evening. Duran made three saves in the first half that helped the Huskies keep it tied 0-0 heading into halftime.
The Huskies came out of the halftime break with a purpose creating two corner kick opportunities in the first six minutes of the half.Â
On the second corner kick chance, Jackie Harnett played a ball into the box that found Cara Elmendorf. The UConn midfielder was able to get a pass off to Lucy Cappadona as she was getting knocked down. Cappadona teed up a shot that was blocked but the rebound found Jessica Mazo, Mazo capitalized with her second goal of the season to make it 1-0 Huskies.
The Huskies now move to 1-0 in BIG EAST play for the first time since rejoining the league in the spring of 2021. The last time the Huskies won its BIG EAST opener was in 2011.
Next up, the Huskies finish the weekend road trip in New York City with a match at St. John's on Sunday, September 25 at 1 p.m.
