Huskies Open 2022 with a Win

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The UConn women's cross country team got the 2022 season of to a winning start by winning the individual and team titles at the Marist Season Opener at Vassar Farm in Poughkeepsie, NY.
The Huskies topped the field of seven teams with their top-five finishers all in the top-8 to finish with 25 total points. "What a great opener at Marist, a great start for us," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Beth Alfond-Sullivan. "Certainly an opener for the teams running today and for us, we ran our freshman and sprinkled some upper classmen into our lineup. Just really proud of our efforts. I thought we closed really well today and were a dominant pack out there. Really couldn't ask for more from this team today."
Senior Caroline Webb (Greenwich, CT) led the charge for UConn with her first career victory and a new PR time of 18:20.8 on the 5K course. Freshman Chloe Trudel (Amherst, NH) was third overall in her first collegiate performance, clocking in at 18:38.5.
Freshmen Calista Mayer (Tolland, CT), Megan Minniucci (Bolton, CT) and Maddie Sweeney (New Milford, CT) rounded out the top-five runners for UConn. Mayer was sixth overall in 18:51.7, Minicucci took seventh in a time of 18:53.1 and Sweeney was eighth at 18:58.2
"Just a dominant win for Webb, and a new PR by over a minute," stated Sullivan. "Chloe had a tremendous race and her last mile was outstanding; really closed well. Calista using her 800-meter speed at the end, closed really well. We are going to see a lot from this freshman class over their four years at UConn. They really showed a great intensity and desire."
Freshman Logan Hughes (Enosburg, VT) took 10th overall (19:02.5) and she was followed by junior Caroline Towle (Bedford, MA) in 12th(19:24.2), freshman Ally McCarthy (Sandy Hook, CT) in 22nd (19:55.9) and freshman Megan Perrotta (Berlin, CT) in 28th (20:14.1).

The Huskies will the Providence Friar Invitational at the Mark Coogan Cross Country Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass., the site of this year's BIG EAST Championship, next Friday, September 9.
"We go three weeks in a row from here, and we will mix up as we go. So great to see the Huskies in action finally. This is a program steeped in tradition and success. She didn't runj today, but Randi Burr gave the pre-race speech and you can just see the leadership. We are excited with what we saw out there today."
