STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's cross country team is back in action this Friday afternoon racing in the Providence Friar Invitational. The Huskies are coming off a team and individual win at last weekend's opener at Marist.
The Huskies will line-up with the fellow BIG EAST schools, Providence and Xavier as well as New Hampshire and Stony Brook at the Mark Coogan Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, MA. The Huskies were ranked fourth in the USTFCCCA Northeast Region poll and this race features three other teams in the top-15 regionally with the host Friars the No. 1 team, Stony Brook at No. 6 and UNH at No. 14.
Friday's race has another wrinkle as the course will also serve as the site of the 2022 BIG EAST Championship late October, giving the Huskies a chance to preview this year's title racecourse.
"This week as more heavy training for us," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Beth Alford-Sullivan. "We are going in to race against conference competition and getting a chance to race on the course where the conference meet is being held add a great element to it."
"We will feature a lot of the same faces from last week's opener and get a chance to some of the upperclassmen debut as well," stated Sullivan. "We are taking the approach that this is a chance to gain some experience for the youth on our team and for some of our veteran runners to kick the rust off and get their seasons started."
The Huskies topped the field of seven teams at last week's Marist Season Opener and had their top-five finishers all in the top-8 to finish with 25 total points. Senior Caroline Webb (Greenwich, CT) led the charge with her first career win and a new PR time of 18:20.8.
UConn will look to get grad student Randi Burr (Westerly, RI) and juniors Rachel Woodruff (Saranac, NY) and Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, CT) in the race line-up as well this weekend.
"It's great to also get to see Providence early on and see how we stack up against the top ranked team in our region right now and its always great to get and early chance to see a conference opponent.
