FH Drops to Providence in Double OT

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn field hockey team (5-9, 2-3 BIG EAST) dropped a 2-1 decision to the Providence Friars on Friday afternoon in a double overtime contest.
The first quarter was scoreless as the Huskies and the Friars battled it out in the midfield. UConn came out strong in the second period, with an unassisted goal from sophomore, Sol Simone, in the first minute of the quarter. This was Simone's fourth goal of the season. The Friars were awarded three penalty corners during the remainder of the period, but all attempts were thwarted by a strong UConn defense, including freshman goalkeeper, Natalie McKenna. The Huskies were up headed into halftime, 1-0.
Providence scored their only goal of regulation a few minutes into the third period, and from then on, the game remained scoreless. The Huskies and the Friars were forced into an overtime period that was largely dominated by UConn.
The Huskies were awarded four penalty corners in 14 minutes of overtime play. However, it was a breakaway from the Friars that would end the game four minutes into the second overtime period.
The Huskies will hit the road to take on the No.12 Boston College Eagles on Sunday, October 15th at 12 p.m. This game marks the start of a three-game road stretch for UConn.
