CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The UConn women's ice hockey team fell in overtime to the Boston College Eagles Friday afternoon by a final of 4-3. The Huskies came back from a goal down in the third period but were unable to net the winning goal in the overtime period.
From the first puck drop, the Huskies were pressuring the Boston College defense and crashing the net looking for rebound opportunities. UConn struck first when Jada Habisch collected a rebound in front of the goal and pushed it past the Boston College netminder to give UConn the early 1-0 lead. Shortly after, freshman Ashley Allard placed herself in front of the Boston College net and tipped an Ainsley Svetek shot home for her first career goal to give UConn the two-goal lead. It did not take long for Boston College to respond as they countered on the ensuing faceoff and on a two on one opportunity found the back of the net to cut the UConn lead to one. Both teams settled in following the rush of goals and UConn entered the period break leading by one.
Boston College found the equalizing goal early in the second period and put pressure back on the Huskies. UConn's offense was quiet in the second period, as the Boston College defense and goaltender Grace Campbell silenced the Huskies saving all nine shots faced. The UConn defense along with junior goaltender Tia Chan remained strong in the second period after allowing the equalizing goal. Tia Chan made fourteen saves in the period preventing further damage in the second period.
Boston College once again found their stride early in the third period, scoring a quick goal to take the 3-2 lead. UConn did not go away quietly as late in the third period while on the power play, Christina Walker found the back of the net on a one time shot to tie the game at three forcing a sudden death overtime period. In overtime both teams had opportunities to end it early. Midway through the overtime period, Boston College found themselves on an odd man rush and Abby Newhook was able to net the overtime winner.
Huskies will be back in action tomorrow October 14 for their home opener at the Toscano Family Ice Forum. Puck Drop is scheduled for 2:00pm and can be streamed live on ESPN+.
