WSOC Clinches BIG EAST Championship Berth With 4-0 Win vs. Villanova

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (7-3-5, 4-1-3 BIG EAST) clinched a BIG EAST Tournament berth with a 4-0 victory against Villanova (4-5-7, 1-5-2 BIG EAST) on Thursday night at Morrone Stadium.
The Huskies clinch their fourth-straight BIG EAST Championship and will be their 23rd overall.appearance in 24 opportunities (most in the league).Â
The UConn offense was clicking on Thursday with a pair of set piece goals on corner kicks in the first half.Â
Junior Abbey Jones found the head of Sophie McCarthy in the 22nd minute to put the Huskies on the board. It was the first goal of the season for McCarthy and her first since her freshman campaign in 2021.
Freshman Anaya Johnson followed with a goal in the 34th minute with a volley off a corner kick from Joyce Ryder.Â
The Huskies continued to dominate play in the second half with Cara Jordan capitalizing on a mistake from the Wildcat's keeper to push the UConn lead to 3-0 in the 52nd minute.
Jones tied for the team lead with her fourth goal of the season on a rocket off the bottom of the crossbar and into the back of the net.Â
The Huskies secured its 10th shutout of the season on Thursday and tied their season-high with their third-straight shutout. Kaitlyn Mahoney made five saves to capture her ninth shutout of the year.
Next up, the Huskies head on the road for a showdown with the Providence Friars. UConn currently sits in third place in the BIG EAST standings, one point ahead of the Friars, and just one point back of second place Xavier.Â
The top two teams in the BIG EAST standings earn byes to the BIG EAST semifinals. Â
