WSOC Scores BIG road victory at Providence, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UConn women's soccer team (8-3-5, 4-1-3 BIG EAST) scored a crucial BIG EAST road victory at Providence (8-3-5, 3-1-5 BIG EAST), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
The win ensures a top-three finish for the Huskies in the BIG EAST standings with an opportunity to finish as high as second in the league.
Fifth-year senior Cara Jordan broke the deadlock in the 24th minute with her team-leading fifth goal of the season, a career-high for the Cromwell, Conn. native.
The Huskies added to its lead in the early moments of the second half after a foul on Jessica Mazo set UConn up just outside the box. Junior Abbey Jones struck her free kick off the post and the ball fell right a wide-open Lucy Cappadona.
The Marlborough, Mass. native powered home her first goal of the season and her seventh goal of her career.
Providence trimmed the UConn lead to one with the 72nd minute but the Huskies defense stayed strong for the final 18 minutes.
Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mahoney made five saves in the victory including four in the second half.
The win is the eighth of the season for the Huskies, tying their win total from last season (8-6-4).
Next up, the Huskies finish the regular season at Seton Hall on Thursday, October 26 at 6 p.m. With a win and Xavier tie/loss, UConn could secure a bye to the BIG EAST Semifinals.
If the Huskies finish in third place, they will host a BIG EAST Quarterfinal matchup on Sunday, October 29 at Morrone Stadium.
