HAMDEN, Conn. – The UConn field hockey team won an overtime thriller against in-state BIG EAST opponent, Quinnipiac Bobcats, on Friday evening.
Quinnipiac came out strong in the first quarter, scoring within the first few minutes of the game. Grad student forward, Julianna Kratz, scored for the Huskies on a penalty corner, assisted by freshmen Sanne Stout and Emma Himmler. The Bobcats scored again late into the first period to take the lead over UConn once again.
While the second period was scoreless, UConn retained possession for a majority of the 15 minutes, however, they couldn't put one into the back of the net and the teams headed to halftime with Quinnipiac up, 2-1.
The Huskies had many opportunities in the third period, including a stretch of four penalty corners in a row with less than six minutes on the clock. A goal finally went in for the Huskies on another penalty corner attempt. Grad student, Belle Bressler, tipped it into the back of the net on an assist from Himmler and Aiyi Young. The Bobcats had two penalty corner attempts at the end of the quarter, but couldn't capitalize, and the game remained tied heading into the final period.
As the last few minutes ticked down on the clock, Quinnipiac was given a yellow card and UConn had three penalty corner attempts to win the game. The Bobcats held the Huskies off and the game was forced into overtime.
With a breakaway less than two minutes into the overtime period, Sol Simone scored the final goal of the game and UConn took home the win. The Huskies are 18-0 against the Quinnipiac Bobcats after today's win.
UConn is headed to UMass on Sunday to take on the Minutewomen in a 2:00pm contest.
