AMHERST, MA – The UConn field hockey team (5-8) lost a regional rivalry against UMass (8-6) on Sunday afternoon on the road in Amherst.
It was an evenly matched first quarter of the game today as neither team put a goal in net on just a couple shots each. Moving into the second period, UConn outshot UMass 9-1. The only shot of the period for UMass came within the first minute of the quarter and ended in a goal, putting the Minutewomen on the board first. As time ticked down in the first half, UConn was awarded a penalty stroke after a penalty corner attempt. Julia Bressler, sophomore forward for the Huskies, took the shot and scored. The game was tied, 1-1, heading into halftime.
The play during the third period of the game was evenly matched, however, UMass capitalized on their penalty corner attempts to score two goals in a matter of five minutes. UConn's attempts for a goal were stifled by a strong goalkeeper for the Minutewomen, who had 14 saves on the day.
The Huskies had 10 shots and four penalty corner attempts in the final period of the game. And while UConn dominated the playing field, they ultimately lost the match.
UConn will return home on Friday afternoon to take on BIG EAST opponent, Providence, at 1:00pm at Nancy Stevens Field. The game will be broadcast live on FloSports.
