STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's hockey team fell to Merrimack Friday evening at the Toscano Family Ice Forum by a final of 6-3. Alex Jefferies for Merrimack scored three goals in the victory.
Merrimack opened the scoring, finding the back of the net only four minutes into the start of the game. UConn did not take long to respond as Matthew Wood took the pass from Chase Bradley and fired the one timer past Hugo Ollas to tie the game. Late in the first period, UConn took the lead, when Hudson Schandor drove hard to the net and after two shot attempts were denied, he willed the puck past the goaltender to give UConn the 2-1 lead heading into the break.
Merrimack jumped on the attack in the second period, first to tie the game, then to take the 3-2 lead. The Huskies once again responded as senior Andrew Lucas took the puck and drove hard to the net, and after one shot was saved, flipped the puck over Ollas pad to tie the game at three. After a late penalty by the Huskies, UConn was forced to play a man down the remainder of the second period, and with time running down, Merrimack was able to score to take the 4-3 lead heading into the break.
To start the third period, the Huskies pulled sophomore Arsenii Sergeev in favor of senior Ethan Haider, however UConn penalties hurt their chance for a comeback resulting in the third period favoring the Warriors. A Tristan Fraser five-minute major and game misconduct, followed by penalties by Chase Bradley and Hudson Schandor resulted in UConn playing a man down the last seven minutes of the game.
