#15 UConn Falls to Holy Cross

STORRS, Conn. – Holy Cross junior goaltender made 31 saves and kept a clean sheet in the second and third periods to lift the Crusaders past the No. 15 UConn Huskies, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in front of 1,343 fans at Toscano Family Ice Forum.
Holy Cross got the game-winning goal in the second period off the stick of freshman Charlotte Sonntag as they improve to 7-23-1 overall and 6-19-0 in Hockey East. The Huskies remain winless in their last six (0-4-2) as they fall to 16-11-4 overall and 10-11-4 in the league.
The Huskies and Crusaders traded goals over the first 20 minutes. Holy Cross struck first, grabing a 1-0 lead just 5:28 into the game. The puck went into the right corner where Lilly Feeney found it and fed it to Carly Beniek in front of the net who buried the one-timer chance for her second of the season.
UConn answered at 12:57 as senior Coryn Tormala notched her eighth. Holy Cross looked to clear up the right boards but defenseman Kaitlyn Yearwood kept the puck in and threw it on net from the blue line. Tormala got a stick on it cutting to the front of the net to redirect past Madison Beck to knot the game at 1-1.
The Crusaders grabbed the lead back midway through the second as Charlotte Sonntag scored her first career goal, burying a shot from the high point through traffic in front of Tia Chan for a 2-1 lead at 10:10.
Camryn Wong was sent off at 17:20 in the second on a 5-minute major, game misconduct for boarding. The Huskies killed off all five minutes of the penalty that ran over into the third period.
UConn'sThe Huskies outshot Holy Cross 11-5 in the third period and got the goalie off with 1:09 left for the extra skater but couldn't solve Beck for the tying goal.
UConn held a 32-23 shot edge and both teams went 0-1 on the power play.
The Huskies are back in action next weekend when they face-off the Crusaders again in a home-and-home series. UConn will host Holy Cross on Friday night at Toscano Family Ice Forum.
