HONOLULU – The UConn baseball team (8-4) captured an 18-10 victory at Hawai'i (7-6) on Saturday afternoon in front of 3361.
The Huskies scored a season-high 18 runs with the help of a season-high 16 walks including four for first baseman Ben Huber.
The all right-handed lineup for the Huskies posted a 15-hit performance and scored in seven of their nine at-bats.
UConn jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with a two-out rally. Jake Studley drilled an RBI double down the left field line and Luke Broadhurst followed with a two-run single.
After a wacky bottom of the first inning that featured the umpires messing up a hit by pitch call and not knowing the count and issuing a three-pitch walk, the Huskies responded with a four-run fourth inning.
Bryan Padilla capped the frame with a three-run homer, his first of the season, to make it 7-3 Huskies. Padilla finished the day with three hits and four runs scored.
Catcher Ryan Hyde had a big day at the plate, recording a leadoff double in the third to mark his first hit in a UConn uniform. The Berlin, Conn. native followed it up with three walks and a two-run single that made it 8-4 UConn in the fourth.
Hawai'i trimmed the UConn lead to as few as three but the Huskies responded with a season-high six runs in the seventh inning to create a little breathing room.
Garrett Coe earned the victory out of the bullpen with 2.1 innings of work, allowing just one hit.
Brady Afthim followed with 1.1 scoreless innings of work and freshman Jude Abbadessa recorded the final two outs of the game to close it out.
Dominic Freeberger recorded a four-hit effort, the first Husky to log four hits or more in a game this season. The graduate student has hit safely in 11-straight games.
UConn looks to win the series on Monday night with a 6:35 p.m. HT / 12:35 a.m. ET first pitch. The game will be broadcasted on Spectrum Sports.
