HookC Wins Home Opener, 7-3

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (13-5) won its home opener, 7-3, against UMass on Wednesday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.
LHP Garrett Coe set the tone for the Huskies with 4.0 shutout innings of work. The Lakeside, Conn. native allowed just two hits and struck out a season-high four batters.
First baseman Ben Huber got UConn on the board in the first with his 12th double of the season that scored David Smith from first base.
Luke Broadhurst hit the first home run of the season at Elliot with his solo shot to center field in the third. The fourth homer of the season for Broadhurst made it 2-0 Huskies.
UConn added a three-spot in the fourth with an RBI single off the bat of David Smith. The team captain fnished the day with his first three-hit game of the season.Â
Freeberger followed with a two-run single to make it 5-0 Huskies. The Baltimore, Md. native notched his eighth multi-hit game and has hit safely in 16 of the Huskies 18 games this season.Â
Will Nowak (1.1 IP), Zach Fogell (0.2 IP) and Devin Kirby (1.0 IP) closed out the ballgame with 3.0 scoreless innings that saw just one base runner for the MInuetemen.
UConn has won eight of its last 10 games and now enter a three-game series against Rutgers (12-8), a team that has won 9 of its last 10 games. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. on Friday, March 24.Â
