Huskies Shut Down Columbia in NYC on Saturday Evening

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The UConn Women's Lacrosse team shut the Columbia Lions down in NYC on Saturday evening, winning the game 16-8. The game was previously scheduled for 7pm and was moved up to 5pm due to impending inclement weather.
The UConn offense started out strong, tallying seven unanswered goals in the first quarter. Five Huskies scored goals, including junior, Susan Lafountain, who came out hot for the Huskies in the first 20 seconds. Madelyn George, Kate Shaffer, Grace Coon, and Kyra Place all notched goals, with Lafountain and Coon have two apiece. Columbia scored in the last two minutes of the first quarter to cut the lead to six for UConn. George answered that goal with 11 seconds to go to make the score UConn 8 – Columbia 1.
Columbia started the second quarter with a goal from senior Gianna Danese at 13:50. UConn senior's Sophie Sorenson and Shaffer would follow that up, along with junior Lauren Barry and sophomore Kaitlyn Tartaglione. The Huskies were up by 10, which started a running clock on the field at 7:12 left in the second quarter. Columbia would then answer with a goal at 3:25 from sophomore Kate Cunning to stop the clock. UConn's Megan Whitley scored her first goal of the season to the end the half and put the Huskies up by 10.
UConn and Columbia would go back-and-forth during the third quarter. The Lions put the first point up on the board to start the second half. Grad student, Lia LaPrise notched her first goal of the game at 10:51 on the clock from a free position shot to keep the clock ticking. Columbia's Danese scored her second goal of the game with under two minutes on the clock, which was quickly answered by Coon to end the period, Huskies still up by 10.
The Lions scored first to start the final quarter of the game, putting three points up on the board. UConn senior, Kyra Place, would notch the final point of the game to make the score UConn 16 – Columbia 8.
Landyn White had six saves on the day and three gorund balls, while Georgia Hoey notched four saves with one ground ball. UConn controlled 17 draws to Columbia's 10, caused seven turnovers, and had 11 ground balls.
The Huskies will stay on the road as they travel to Villanova, PA to take on the Wildcats on Wednesday, April 5th at 2pm EST.
